Legacy

Vidushi Shanti Hiranand is one of the foremost exponents of thumri-dadra & ghazal gayaki. Her performing career spans several decades, starting from 1947, and she continues to be a regular performer at music festivals in India & abroad as well as a regular broadcaster. The senior-most disciple of Begum Akhtar, she is a true representative of her guru’s legacy & style.

Vidushi Anjali Banerji trained with Begum Akhtar for nearly two decades and performed alongside her in various concerts and festivals across cities in India. Though she is known to have been a very promising artiste, after 1996 she did not sing in public for personal reasons.

Prof. Rita Ganguly is an Indian classical musician, dancer and vocalist. She is known to have trained and performed with Begum Akhtar and Siddheshwari Devi. A winner of 2000 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, she was honoured by the Government of India in 2003 with Padma Shri.

Ms. Rekha Surya received musical training from Begum Akhtar, albeit for a short while. She has performed widely in concerts and lecture venues in India and abroad. She has also trained under the tutelage of Vidushi Girija Devi of the Benaras gharana integrating both styles of singing into an individualistic style.

Begum Akhtar’s other disciples include Vasundhara Pandit, Suraiya Rahman, Kamal Sidhu, Deepti Bose and Prabhati Mukherjee, among several others who claim to have received guidance from her for short durations of time.
