  ART EXPERIENCE

M. HIRIYANNA

1997, xiii+113pp., index ISBN: 81-7304-180-6, Rs. 250 (HB)

For decades, Prof. Hiriyanna's Art Experience has been a lamp which has provided illumination to many a serious students of Indian aesthetics.

The author turned the course of the discussion on Indian art and aesthetics from history to its fundamentals of a worldview, and the diverse path of the quest for truth, viz. through speculative thought or alternately, refinement of senses and sense perceptions.

The present volume carries 15 contributions on topics of Indian aesthetics.  After a penetrating analysis of the fundamental concepts envisaged from a traditional point of view, Prof. Hiriyanna interprets them succintly.  He elucidates the theory of Rasa from the point of sankhya in a masterly fashion; equally illuminating are the other essays on Rasa and Dhvani, and Sanskrit poetics.

M. HIRIYANNA was one of the greatest Sanskrit scholars and Vedantic thinkers of our time.  Trained in Sanskrit in the traditional system, he acquired grounding in Sanskrit grammer, etymology and prosody in the old oral way of learning.

One of the pioneers of Kannada renaissance movement, Prof. Hiriyanna first wrote on psychology and educational subjects in Kannada.

Prof. Hiriyanna was a prolific writer.  His two famous books, outlines of Indian Philosophy, and Essentials of Indian Philosophy, are both examples of the art of writing at its best.  Prominent among his edited and translated works are Vedantasara, Naishkarmyasiddhi, and Ishtasiddhi.
