The Northern Barrier of India, a popular account of the Jammu and  Kashmir territories is written by Frederic Drew published by Edward Stanford, London in the year 1877. This book is the selection of those parts which will interest a general reader. One gets to know the idea on the subjects as the physical condition of the country, the distribution of languages and faiths within it, its political organisation, or the routes that traverse it. All of the above are fully dealt, and by the accompanying maps and sections illustrated. The map accompanying this book shows particularly the distribution of races, but it will also be found as a sufficient topographical guide through the descriptions of the country. This book contains 26 illustrations accompanied with 2 maps.

The present book is the extract of the extensive work done by Frederic Drew on the Jammu and Kashmir territories. In this volume author has given a topographical view of Jammu  Kashmir, Giligit, Baltistan and Ladakh. The work apart from geographical assessment focuses on the socio-economic and socio-religious aspects of the communities living in this religion. The illustrations and sketches published in this book adds to the nostalgia through which one can make out the history of bygone era.

Types of Modern Indian Buildings (1913) by Gorden Sanderson. India possess an impressive heritage in the historical continuity of Indian architectural traditions. In order to promote the study and appreciation of Indian Culture, Indian society was formed in London in early 20th century. The initiative taken by the  society in collecting material relating to the living tradition of Indian art and architecture with the active support of the government of India resulted in the publication of this volume.

The photographs of the contemporary architecture during colonial period throw ample light on the transition phase of architecture was subjected to but nevertheless it retained its Indian flavor. The photographs 93 in number and the text by Gordon Sanderson attempts to cover some of the modern Indian Building at Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Allahabad, Lucknow, Ajmer, Bhopal, Bikaner, Gwalior, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur with notes on the craftsmen employed on their design and execution.

The photographs are lively and adds to the nostalgia about our ancient past, the textual information makes it interesting piece of reading for layman as well as the serious student of architecture and archaeology.
